A candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, María Fernanda Espinosa met on Tuesday with the Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the United Nations, Ambassador Zénon Mukongo Ngay, at the Organization’s headquarters in New York.
During the meeting, the former Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs presented her vision for the future of the United Nations as well as the key priorities she intends to promote if elected to lead the Organization.
Ms. Espinosa also expressed her desire to visit Kinshasa as soon as the conditions allow, in order to present her vision to the Congolese authorities and discuss with them the major challenges related to multilateralism and international governance.
Ambassador Zénon Mukongo Ngay, for his part, outlined the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s priorities during its term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, including its commitment to international peace and security, dialogue, and respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter.
Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa held the position of President of the United Nations General Assembly from 2018 to 2019. She was the fourth woman to take on this role and the first person from Latin America to preside over the General Assembly.
