The Permanent Mission of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the United Nations organized a high-level roundtable entitled “A Day on Mount Mutombo at the United Nations” on Friday, January 16, 2026, in the ECOSOC Chamber at United Nations Headquarters in New York. This major event formed part of the official launch of the DRC’s mandate as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the 2026–2027 term.
Held under the theme “Honoring Dikembe Mutombo’s Legacy – A Call to Action for Health, Education, Sport and Quality of Life in Africa,” the event paid special tribute to the distinguished Congolese figure and to his humanitarian commitment, recognized worldwide.
The programme featured a high-level roundtable devoted to health, education, sport, and quality of life, followed by the screening of the award-winning documentary Mount Mutombo, directed by Dina Khreino, retracing the life, values, and exceptional commitment of Dikembe Mutombo.
Ambassador Zénon Mukongo Ngay, Permanent Representative of the DRC to the United Nations, underscored the strong symbolic significance of the event: “By honoring Dikembe Mutombo’s legacy, the DRC reaffirms its commitment to solidarity, responsible leadership, and human progress, values that also inspire our action on the Security Council.”
A private luncheon, organized at the conclusion of the roundtable, brought together distinguished guests and extended the discussions around Dikembe Mutombo’s inspiring vision, grounded in sharing, collective uplift, and responsibility toward future generations.
The roundtable was organized in partnership with the Dikembe Mutombo Memorial Fund and the Mutombo family.
