This Tuesday at United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Democratic Republic of the Congo was elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, with 183 votes out of 187 ballots cast.
The DRC will take its seat as of January 1, 2026.
Speaking live on Radio Télévision Nationale Congolaise (RTNC), the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs expressed her deep gratitude to the Head of State, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, and to all partner countries that supported the DRC’s candidacy.
This election constitutes important diplomatic recognition of the DRC’s growing role on the international stage. It also reflects the renewed confidence of United Nations Member States in the DRC, under the leadership of the Head of State, His Excellency Mr. Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo.
During its campaign for this non-permanent seat, the DRC presented itself as the voice of Africa on key issues such as collective security, international justice, the reform of multilateralism, sustainable development, and fairness in the governance of natural resources, notably thanks to its status as the planet’s last green lung.
This is the third time that the DRC has joined the circle of the 15 member States of the United Nations Security Council, following its notable terms in 1982–1983 and 1990–1991.
